Taxonomic notes
According to Johansen & Womersley (1994: 611), the name Jania fastigiata has been misapplied to this species by various authors.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Common on larger brown algae, especially on species of Cystophora on rough-water coasts; epilithic plants are apparently less common than epiphytic plants; under calmer conditions, what appears to be a form of this species (corresponding to Jania tenuissima Sonder) is epiphytic on seagrasses and other algae (Womersley & Johansen in Womersley 1996: 301).

Type information
Type locality: "Australasie" (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 242). Holotype: 'sur les Fucus de l'Australasie'. Herb. Lamouroux, CN (Womersley & Johansen 1996: 301).
