Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Punctaria is Punctaria plantaginea (Roth) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Platysiphon glacialis (Rosenvinge) H.Kawai & T.Hanyuda.

Type locality: Port Clarence, Alaska (Station 20b-c); (INA 1996) Type: Frits Johansen; 30.vii.1913; dredged in 6-9 m; (INA 1996) Notes: [same type collection as Punctaria fissilis Setchell & Gardner 1924].

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stipitate, provided with a stalk or a little stipe (Stearn 1983).
