The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon purpureum (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Woelkerling & L.M.Irvine.

Type locality: Norwegian coast; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Type: not designated (Woelkerling 1993: 227), and "... collections pre-dating the protologue not found in TRH... " (Woelkering et al. 2005: 516).

Adjective A (Latin), polymorphous, polymorphic; variable in form (Brown 1954).
