According to Edyvane & Womersley (1994: 299), several references refer to this species as a Gracilaria, but the type specimen is a Gigartina (see May 1948: 59). Cited as a synonym of Gracilaria corniculata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh 1852 by Silva et al. (1996: 160).
