Type locality: Kvivig, Strømø, Faeroes (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 810). Type: C (Womersley 1984: 288). Notes: South & Skelton (2003: 706) give the following data: Vaucheria marina Lyngbye 1819: 79, pl. 22A (sporophyte).

Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
Kornmann (1938) was the first to show that Halicystis ovalis and Derbesia marina are phases of a single entity.
