The type species (holotype) of the genus Anabaena is Anabaena oscillatorioides Bory de Saint-Vincent ex Bornet & Flahault.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Dolichospermum circinale (Rabenhorst ex Bornet & Flahault) P.Wacklin, L.Hoffmann & J.Komárek
