The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa anceps (Lamarck) Decaisne

Type locality: Swan River, Western Australia, Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 220). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Harvey (1849: 98) (Silva et al., 1996); see Harvey et al. (2013: 119).
