Nomenclatural note
"This new combination was proposed by Rabenhorst (1847: 157) who reported the species from Trieste (Italy). Later, Zanardini (1865: 53, pl. LIIIB) proposed the new combination D. squarrosa (Kützing) Zanardini [a later isonym without nomenclatural status according to Art. 6.3 Note 2 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), of the combination previously proposed by Rabenhorst], recording the species from Dalmatia (Croatia). The synonymy between D. squarrosa and D. rigidula was proposed by Ardissone (1883: 429), followed in that by both De Toni (1903: 1206) and Preda (1908: 177). It should be noted that Giaccone et al. (1986: 675) treated erroneously this species as distinct from D. rigidula." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 540). - (08 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
