Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella capillacea (S.G.Gmelin) Santelices & Hommersand.

Type locality: Anaheim Landing (south of Long Beach), Orange County, Calif.; (Loomis 1960: 4) Holotype: Loomis 5330; July 22, 1934; In beach drift; Private collection of Mrs. Nina Loomis, (contact details are available in original reference); (Dawson 1953: 79) Notes: Dawson (1953: 79) notes isotype preparations are on slides 1187-1188 in HAHF.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), flattened out, usually in one plane (Stearn 1973).
