Taxonomic notes
Although Kjellman introduced Isthmoplea in 1877, p. 30, as a new name to accommodate Capsicarpella sphaerospora, the combination Isthmoplea sphaerospora was first made in 1879 (Athanasiadis, 1996).

Nomenclatural notes
Carmichael was responsible for the description in Hooker, not Harvey (Guiry, pers. comm.). Stegenga & Mol (1983: 97) cite this species as Isthmoplea sphaerophora (Carmicheal ex Harvey in Hooker) Kjellman.
