Taxonomic note
Lipkin & Silva (2002: 32) record H. cispella from Southern Red Sea. They note that their plants were referable to H. crispella var. laxa, which appears to be merely a shaded-habitat ecophene. Huisman (2018: 437) notes: "The N.W.A. specimens match precisely the description and illustrations provided by Price & Scott (op. cit. 161-162). Schlech & Abbott (op. cit. 349-350) suggested that this variety was not worth distinguishing, and Lipkin & Silva (2002: 32) noted that it 'appears to be merely a shaded-habitat ecophene'. However, the relationship of the two taxa has not been tested by molecular methods, and given the different habit and number of pericentral cells, as well as the absence of intermediates among the specimens examined, both varieties are maintained here." - (09 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry

Distributional note
"It should be noted that the var. laxa was never recorded from the Mediterranean Sea even if, on the basis of the observations by Falkenberg (op. cit.), it should be present in the Gulf of Naples (Italy). M.D. Guiry in Guiry & Guiry (2023) reports this variety for Turkey with reference to the checklist of Taskin et al. (2008). However, in the papers listed in the bibliographical references of that paper (Taskin et al., op. cit.: 32), many of which inappropriate, are quoted only H. wurdemannii and / or H. sp.. Instead, H. crispella var. laxa and its autonym were recorded, with no comment, from the coast of the province of Hatay (Turkey) by Aysel et al. (2006: 168), not reported by Taskin et al. (op. cit.)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 509). - (07 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
