Taxonomic notes
There is some doubt, originating from culture studies (Lewin & Robertson, 1971), as to whether freshwater and marine species of this genus should be maintained, and Schneider & Searles (1991: 178) adopt a single species.

Distributional notes
Womersley (1994: 24) notes that this species is more common in brackish than marine waters, and was recorded from two freshwater localities in Victoria by Entwisle & Kraft (1984: 220).

Habitat notes
Epiphytic on Hydrolithon farinosum, Pneophyllum fragile, Polysiphonia spp., Chondria spp., and other red algae that were epiphytic on Thalassia testudinum (Albis-Salas & Gavio 2011). - (30 Jan 2012) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Marine, Brackish and in hardwater ponds with submerged vegetation where it occurs as an epiphyte. Womersely (1994: 24) notes that this species is more common in brackish than marine waters, and was recorded also from freshwater localities.
