Basionym
Zonaria naevosa Suhr

Type information
Type locality: Algoa Bay, Cape Province, South Africa (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 595). Lectotype: S s.n. (De Clerck 2003: 183). Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that the type locality is Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He states that a specimen from S was selected as lectotype, as the main collection in B is destroyed and KIEL, where part of the Suhr herbarium is located, does not contain any specimens of Z. naevosa, annotated by Suhr. Although the specimen in S does not correspond with Suhr's original drawing, it is annotated by Suhr and matches the protologue completely. According to Womersley (1987: 192), the type was collected by Ecklon and it may be located in LD.

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Zonaria naevosa Suhr 1834
Cutleria naevosa (Suhr) Hering ex Krauss 1846

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Dictyota grandis Kützing 1849
Dictyota polycarpa Sonder ex Kützing 1859

Nomenclatural notes
According to De Clerck (2003: 174), this combination is often accredited to J. Agardh (1848: 95) who, however, did not have the intention of making a new combination. This is supported by the fact that J. Agardh mentions 'Dictyota naevosa Montagne' in his description. Womersley (1987: 190) cites the authority for this species as(Suhr) J. Agardh 1848.

Taxonomic notes
Reported as D. naevosa (Suhr) Montagne by Price et al. (1978). John et al. (2004) cite Dictyota polycarpa J.V. Lamour. as a synonym of this species.

General environment
This is a marine species.
