The type species (holotype) of the genus Macrocystis is Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C.Agardh

Adjective (Latin), narrow-leaved (Neal 1993).

Lectotype locality: Storm Bay, Tasmania (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 641). Lectotype: La Billardière; herb. Bory, PC. Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Ducker (1979b: 20) for more information on the lectotype location of this species.
