Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Prasiola is Prasiola crispa (Lightfoot) Kützing.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), stipitate, provided with a stalk or a little stipe (Stearn 1973).

Marine, supralittoral: harbour mole, Helgoland (Karsten et al., 2005: 560).
