Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Prasiola is Prasiola crispa (Lightfoot) Kützing.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), stipitate, provided with a stalk or a little stipe (Stearn 1973).

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Prasiola cornucopiae J.Agardh 1883

Taxonomic notes
Saunders & Kucera (2010: 522) found that samples of P. stipitata grouped with and were identical in tufA and rbcL-3P to Pacific samples identified as Prasiola meridionalis (based on their interpretation of Gabreielson et al. 2006). Sutherland et al. (2016) report "Prasiola cf. meridionalis" from two localities in Japan, but their sequences are identical to Prasiola stipitata from Europe. - (15 Apr 2013) - Wendy Guiry

Distributional notes
This species most probably does not occur in the Mediterranean area; the record of Gerloff & Geissler (1974) for Greece needs reassessment (Rindi, pers. comm.).

Habitat notes
Supralittoral (Gustavs et al. 2011). - (29 Jul 2011) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Common names

(as Prasiola stipitata Suhr ex Jessen)
Swedish: Måsgrönska (Tolstoy & Österlund 2003).

Habitat
Marine, supralittoral: harbour mole, Helgoland (Karsten et al., 2005: 560).

Type information
Syntype localities: Habitat in saxis mari oppositis. Ad litus maris Baltici primus invenit Hansen ... prope Sandwieck in ducato Slesvicensi [Germany]. Specimena Hibernica [Ireland] nomine Ulvae furfuracea inscripta in collectione Binderi asservantur. Ad litus maris Norvegici detexit Dr. Schübeler ... prope Lillesand [Norway]. (Jessen 1848: 16). Lectotype: original illustration (Jessen 1848, pl. II, fig. 11; "frondes Slesvicenses"): (Burrows 1991: 24). Notes: According to Womersley (1984: 164) the type locality is “Hibernia (Ireland).” INA: Baltic, near Sandwieck, Slesvig, leg. Hansen; also Ireland, coll. Binder; Norway, leg. Schübeler.
