Type locality: Mariana Islands (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 879). Type: herb. alg. Agardh; LD no. 15661 (Yoshida 1998: 113).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
