Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Basionym
Millepora fasciculata Lamarck

Type information
Type locality: Unknown, probably Mediterranean (Woelkerling 1998: 268). Neolectotype: PC the smaller of two plants (Basso, Rodondi & Mari 2004: 222). Notes: According to Basso et al. (2004: 222), the original collection of Millepora fasciculata in PC is heterogeneous, and therefore a previous lectotypification proposed by Woelkerling (in Woelkerling & Lamy, 1998: 268) must be superseded. The smaller of the two plants, which belongs to an undescribed species of Clathromorphum, is selected as the new lectotype. The larger plant in the collection belongs to a species of Lithothamnion. The new lectotype has been illustrated by Woelkerling (in Woelkerling & Lamy 1998: 267, fig. 113 A, specimen on right; fig. 114 A) and its anatomy is also shown in Basso et al. 2004: Figs 13-17.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), clustered, growing in bundles (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
According to Basso et al. (2004: 222), Millepora fasciculata Lamarck has been used as the basionym of Lithophyllum fasciculatum but the latter does not agree with either of the two specimens in the type collection. They also note that the protologue of M. fasciculata includes the description of one more collection not found in PC (Woelkerling in Woelkerling & Lamy 1998: 268).

General environment
This is a marine species.
