The type species (holotype) of the genus Petrospongium is Petrospongium berkeleyi (Greville) Nägeli ex Kützing.

Type locality: Japan [no locality given] (Womersley 1987: 100). Type: herb. Okamura, SAP (Yoshida 1998: 267). Notes: Womersley (1987) notes that a lectotype should be selected.
