The type species (holotype) of the genus Pelvetia is Pelvetia canaliculata (Linnaeus) Decaisne & Thuret.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Silvetia babingtonii (Harvey) E.A.Serrão, T.O.Cho, S.M.Boo & Brawley.

Eponomy
Named for Charles Wright (1811-1885), American botanist and collector. In 1853 and 1856 he took part in the Rodgers-Ringgold North Pacific Exploring and Surveying Expedition.
