Description
Long, multicellular flexuous filaments, in young cultures without constrictions at the crosswalls.
Each cell with a single, yellow-green, parietal, plate-like chromatophore covering about
half the inner cell wall. Dividing cells with two chromatophores before formation of the
transverse wall. Chromatophores equal to cell length in young filaments but situated centrally
in cells of older filaments. Oil globules often present particularly in older cultures. Filament
width 3-4.5 µm, cell length 3.5-9 µm in young, and up to 18 µm in old cultures. In old filaments
the transverse walls sometimes concavo--convex. Akinetes readily formed in old cultures,
usually spherical, 3.5-10 µm, rarely 15 µm diam., often with a thickened wall covered with
short spines.
