Type locality: 7º48'N, 146º46'E, near the Caroline Islands; (Honda & Inouye 2002: 76) Holotype: 30 November 1990; TNS (National Science Museum, Tokyo); TNS-AL- 48982 (glass slide) (Honda & Inouye 2002: 77) Notes: Isotype: TNS-AL 49070 (resin-embedded EM block). Type culture: Living material deposited as strain MBIC-10503 in the Marine Biotechnology Institute Co. Ltd, Kamaishi Laboratory, Japan.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1983).

Description
Motile cell, unicellular flagellate, spherical to ovoid, 4.0-4.6 µm long and 3.2-4.0 µm wide; anterior flagellum 8.0-11.5 µm long, posterior flagellum 5.5-6.0 µm long; flagellar swelling in posterior flagellum; single chloroplast cup-shaped, occupying posterior half portion of the cell; single pyrenoid filling chloroplast cavity; propagation by means of binary division in non-motile stage in dark period.
