The type species (holotype) of the genus Synechococcus is Synechococcus elongatus (Nägeli) Nägeli.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyanobium bacillare (Butcher) Komárek, J.Kopecký & Cepák.

Type locality: "First noticed in June 1947 in a tube inoculated with a greenish brown colony from a culture from the Conway tanks growing on a solid medium."; (Butcher 1952: 189)
