Publication details
Bonnemaisonia clavata Hamel 1930: 104

Published in: Hamel, G. (1930). Floridées de France VI. Revue Algologique 5: 61-109 (reprint 1-49).

Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bonnemaisonia is Bonnemaisonia asparagoides (Woodward) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), clavate (Stearn 1973).

Synonym(s)
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.

Nomenclatural notes
Hamel (1930), in his original description of this species, mentions plants from the south coast of England. Its status vis-à-vis Bonnemaisonia hamifera requires further study.

Taxonomic notes
The only apparent difference between this enity and B. asparagoides is that it is dioecious whilst the the latter is monoecious. As B. asparagoides has a direct life history, I speculate that the situation is the same as in Mastocarpus stellatus: entities that are monoecious have a direct life history with no tetrasporophte; entites that are dioecious have a heteromorphic tetrasporophyte. In that instance the two are likely to be part of the same species. (M.D. Guiry, 16 September 2002).

Distributional notes
Dixon & Irvine (1977: 159) note that two specimens from the south coast of England were includee by Hamel in his original description, but it has not been recently reported from Britian and Ireland (M.D. Guiry, 16 September 2002).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Roscoff, Brest, Tanger, Marseille (Silva 1996-to date).
