The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Taxonomic notes
In the Caribbean, it is highly variable in colour and morphology (Littler & Littler, 2000).

Distributional notes
Introduced to the Hawaiian Islands from Florida in 1987 (Abbott, 1999). Widealy used in the aquarium trade because it has many colour variants and grows easily (Littler & Littler, 2000).

This is a marine species.

Holotype locality: Barrachois Harbour, Colchester Co., Nova Scotia (McLachlan 1979: 19, 20). Holotype: N.L. Bird; 24 September 1974; 0.5-2.5 m depth. NRCC sheet 6919 (3 specimens, spermatangial, cystocarpic, tetrasporic) (McLachlan 1979: 19, 20).
