The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnionella is Antithamnionella sarniensis Lyle.

Lectotype locality: Norway (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 381). Lectotype: Illustration in O.F.Müller, 1782, pl. 828, fig. 1 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 14). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Athanasiadis in Maggs and Hommersand (1993: 14).
