Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polyopes emarginatus (Kützing) A.J.K.Millar.

Taxonomic note
Millar & Prud'homme van Reine (2005: 540) note that habit and internal anatomy show this species to be the some as Grateloupia emarginata Kützing. Chondrus coccineis Kützing thus becomes a heterotypic synonym of Polyopes emarginatus (Kützing) Millar 2005. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
