The type species (lectotype) of the genus Aglaophyllum is Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackhouse) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackhouse) Greville.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1983).

Taxonomic note
"This species was described by Zanardini (1847: 195, pl. III/a-c). from Chioggia (Italy). Zanardini himself (Zanardini, 1858: 270) reduced it to as a variety of Nitophyllum ocellatum as N. ocellatum var. acuminatum (Zanardini) Zanardini. De Toni & Levi (1888: 69) erroneously quoted Zanardini's specie sas Nitophyllum acuminatum Zanardini. Finally, De Toni (1900: 629) reduced it to a variety of N. punctatum as N. punctatum var. acuminatum (Zanardini) De Toni." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 490). - (06 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
