Taxonomic notes
John et al. (2004) cite Scytosiphon complanatus (Rosenvinge) Doty as a synonym of this species.
Nomenclatural notes
Cremades (in Cremades & Perez-Cirera, 1990: 492) correctly proposed the name Scytosiphon simplicissiumus (Clemente) Cremades for this species based on the priority of Ulva simplicissimus Clemente. But, in view of the widespread and consistent use of the binomial Scytosiphon lomentaria for this species, Pedersen & Kristiansen (1994: 645) proposed the rejection of Ulva simplicissima Clemente, the basionym of Scytosiphon simplicissimus. This proposal was approved at the XVI International Botanical Congress (St. Louis, Missouri, 26-30 July 1999) (Barrie & Greuter, 1999). Accordingly, Scytosiphon lomentaria is the correct name for this species (Guiry, pers. comm.).
