Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Herposiphonia is Herposiphonia tenella (C.Agardh) Ambronn.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Basionym
Hutchinsia secunda C.Agardh

Type information
Type locality: "In mari Mediterraneo." [Mediterranean Sea] (Agardh 1824: 149). Holotype: LD? (Huisman 2018: 519).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), next, following, second, having leaves or other features turned towards the same side (Stearn 1973).

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Hutchinsia secunda C.Agardh 1824
Polysiphonia secunda (C.Agardh) Zanardini 1840
Herposiphonia tenella f. secunda (C.Agardh) Hollenberg 1968

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Conferva lanosa Draparnaud 1824

Nomenclatural notes
According to Lawson & John (1987: 314) the first valid combination appears to be that of Falkenberg (1901) as early combinations made by Nägeli and by Ambronn were not validly published (see South and Tittley, 1986).

Taxonomic notes
John et al. (2004) cite Herposiphonia tenella var. secunda Hollenberg, Polysiphonia secunda (C. Agardh) Mont. and Polysiphonia tenella J. Agardh as synonyms of Herposiphonia secunda (C. Agardh) Falkenb. “We follow Schneider & Searles (1997) and Masuda & Kogame (2000) in considering H. secunda and H. tenella as distinct species.” (Furnari et al., 2003).

Distributional notes
John et al. (2003) do not distinguish between Herposiphonia secunda , f. densa and f. tenella when presenting their distributional data and it is assumed that the data are the same as for Lawson & John (1987).

General environment
This is a marine species.
