The type species (holotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

Description
Delicate membranous monostromatic reddish-brown fronds, becoming pink on drying, to 150 mm long, with very short stipe from basal holdfast.
Habitat
Usually epiphytic on larger algae, mid-intertidaltidal to shallow subtidal, spring to autumn, widely distributed, common.
