The type species (holotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Pyropia leucosticta (Thuret) Neefus & J.Brodie

Description
Delicate membranous monostromatic reddish-brown fronds, becoming pink on drying, to 150 mm long, with very short stipe from basal holdfast.

Habitat
Usually epiphytic on larger algae, mid-intertidaltidal to shallow subtidal, spring to autumn, widely distributed, common.

Type locality: Rochers des Flamandes, Cherbourg, France (Brodie & Irvine 2003: 120). Type: Thuret; 28 February 1857; PC (Brodie & Irvine 2003: 120). Notes: Isotypes in CHE (Brodie & Irvine, 2003: 120).
