The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitella confervacea (Brébisson) A.Braun ex Leonhardi.

Lectotype locality: dans le Maine a Chateauthébaud (L. inf.); (Gregor & al. 2012: table 1) Lectotype: Renov F. Hy; 16/8 1864; PC; 0143217 (Gregor & al. 2012: table 1) Notes: specimen labeled "Nitella confervacea forma Renovi..." According to Gregor et al. (2012: table 1), Hy (1905:93) did not provide locality data in the protologue, but subsequently, Hy (1913: 18) noted that material came from "Loire-Inf.: Dans la Maine a Chateauthébaud ...)".
