Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palmaria palmata (Linnaeus) F.Weber & D.Mohr.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), lobed or divided in the manner of an outspread hand with the sinuses between the lobes pointing to the place of attachment (Stearn 1983).

Nomenclatural note
In the text to pl. 217, Harvey does not cite the name Fucus palmatus var. marginifer Turner (q.v.) under his var. ß marginifera, only listing Fucus palmatus as described by Stackhouse Ner. Brit. p. 54, t. 12 and Ulva caprina Gunnerus Fl. Nov. vol. ii, p. 126, t. 6, f. 4. Consequently, this is a new name which should be attributed solely to Harvey. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
