Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1983).

Gymnogongrus fastigiatus Harvey 1859 is illegitimate [a later homonym of Gymnogongrus fastigiatus (Endlicher) Ruprecht 1850] and cannot serve as a basionym; in accordance with ICN Art. 58.1, a new name was proposed with reuse of the specific epithet by Lewis & Womersley (1994: 265). - (30 June 2009) - G.M.
