Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), spongy, porous, soft like a wet sponge (Stearn 1973).
According to Silva et al. (1996) the following names have been misapplied to this species: Codium difforme by Jadin (1935: 157) and Codium mamillosum by Levring (1938: 16).
This is a marine species.
Lectotype locality: King George’s Sound, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 862). Lectotype: TCD, Herb. Harvey Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 577 (Womersley 1984: 230). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting P.C. Silva & Womersley (1956: 268) for more information on the lectotype locality of this species.
