Description: Medium-sized (ca. 60 µm) elongated, laterally compressed flagellate of asymmetric fusiform shape, divided by a circular cingulum into a smaller epicone and larger hypocone. Epitheca an asymmetrical cone with unequally concave sides, asymmetrical apex and a flaring base. The apex contracts abruptly to a blunt end with a small blade. Hypocone about 0.55 of total body length and contracts uniformly posteriorly on both sides to an obtuse, oblique truncate antapex. Cingulum is wide and deeply impressed, the cingular lists are small. Sulcus is short, the right sulcal list is shorter than the left one, both are hyaline and not conspicuous. The plate formula is like that of Dinophysis Stein. Nucleus situated in the hypocone, no chloroplast. Nutrition is by phagotrophy, a feeding tube is extended by the cell and the prey (ciliates, tinnids) are sucked out. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Marine plankton, reported rarely from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean; from polar water off Alaska to subtropical regions.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
