This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Pilinia.
Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type locality: near Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen, Germany (Silva & al. 1996: 717).
Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), full of cracks, marked with numerous cracks (Stearn 1973).
According to Silva et al. (1996) this genus is of uncertain position within the Phaeophyceae and they recommend consulting a review of its troubled taxonomic history by Papenfuss (1962).
