The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nusuttodinium myriopyrenoides (H.Yamaguchi, T.Nakayama, A.Kai & Inouye) Y.Takano & H.Yamaguichi.
