The type species (lectotype) of the genus Grateloupia is Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Brest, Atlantic France (De Clerck et al. 2005: 392).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), very little, very least (Stearn 1985).

Distributional notes
This species has been introduced accidentally, apparently from the NE Atlantic, probably via oyster cultivation, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 173) being first found in the Etang de Thau (France) in 1998. - (5 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
According to De Clerck et al. (2005: 397), this species is most frequently encountered on bedrock or smaller stones and pebbles from upper intertidal to lower intertidal pools.
