Distributional note
"Petalonia binghamiae has been reported from California, PacificMexico, Brazil, Chile, Namibia, South Africa, China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the Azores, Portugal (Guiry and Guiry 2022). Most of these records lack genetic confirmation; an exception is the molecular study by Kogame et al. (2011), who found that Hawaiian records were in fact a new species, P. tatewakii K.Kogame & A.Kurihara. In California, P. binghamiae has been collected from Santa Barbara County to San Diego County, including Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Santa Catalina, and San Clemente islands (specimens in the UC herbarium). Even though its global distribution is wide and disjunct, P. binghamiae has not been considered a weedy species, although with further molecular analyses it may prove to be an introduction to parts of its range." (Hughey & Miller 2023: 121). - (21 May 2024) - M.D. Guiry
