The type species (holotype) of the genus Chondria is Chondria tenuissima (Withering) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Claviclonium ovatum (J.V.Lamouroux) Kraft & Min-Thein

Type locality: 'Nouv. Holl.' (Kraft & Min-Thein 1983: 172). Holotype: Herb. Lamouroux, CN (Kraft & Min-Thein 1983: 172). Notes: Herb. Lamouroux, PC (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 376).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).

Nomenclatural notes
Silva et al. (1996: 280, 355) note that this is a legitimate renaming, at the varietal level, of Gigartina ovata and that combinations of this basionym, although incorrect, are also legitimate (see Art. 52.3). - (26 Feb 2009) - Wendy Guiry
