Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ansanella natalensis (T.Horiguchi & R.N.Pienaar) Dawut, Sym & T.Horiguchi.

Type locality: Amanzimtoti, Natal south coast, South Africa; (Horiguchi & Pienaar 1994: 21) Holotype: 18 August 1986; from a tide pool; (Horiguchi & Pienaar 1994: 21)
