This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Saccharina japonica var. diabolica (Miyabe) N.Yotsukura, S.Kawashima, T.Kawai, T.Abe & L.D.Druehl

Lectotype locality: Rasau [Hokkaido, Japan] (Tokida, Nakamura & Druehl 1980: 319). Lectotype: Matsuoka ; 23 September 1894; SAPA (Tokida, Nakamura & Druehl 1980: 319, 317, fig. 6).
