Type locality: Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales, Australia (Bolch, Negri & Hallegraeff 1999: 303). Holotype: fig. 1: August 1997; from sediments. type strain GMNC02 (Bolch, Negri & Hallegraeff 1999: 303). Notes: Type culture is deposited in the algal culture collection of Univ. of Tasmania and at the CSIRO Collection of Living Marine Algae, Tasmania.
