Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ptilota is Ptilota plumosa C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "In Oceano pacifico ad Insulam Vancouver" [Vancouver Island, Canada] (Agardh 1876: 76). Type: LD? (Yoshida 1998: 930). Notes: Despite the clear locality citation in J. Agardh, according to Dawson (1962: 75) the type consists of a collection by Capt. Pike, labeled "Ptilota californica var. concinna" in Herb. Harvey, Trinity College, Dublin and the type locality is Golden Gate [San Francisco], California. Agardh makes no mention of this collection in his protologue. Lectotype information: Specimen Ag. no. 20018 in Agardh's Herbarium in LD, collected from Vancouver Island (Bruce & Saunders, 2016: 43).

Adjective (Latin), fern-like (Stearn 1973).
