The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
