Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Botryocladia is Gastroclonium uvarium (J.A.Murray) Kützing.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 355) Holotype: Preiss 2567; MEL; 504344 (Silva & al. 1996: 355) Notes: Huisman (pers. comm.) writes: "The type of Botryocladia sonderi is said to be a Preiss collection from Rottnest Island (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 355). The holotype in MEL has no information, nor does the Sonder name that it replaced. It might have come from Harvey (1858, pl. 10), also cited in the protologue, but there is no mention of Rottnest there. So, I think the type locality has to be the more general ‘Western Australia’."

From rough-water situations to calm areas with a strong current flow, and from low tide level to 24 m deep (Womersley 1996: 49).

Nomenclatural note
According to Silva, Basson & Moe (1996:355): "The basionym of Chrysymenia obovata (C. Agardh) Sonder, Gastroclonium obovatum (C. Agardh) Kützing, and Botryocladia obovata (C. Agardh) Kylin is Chondria ovalis (Hudson) C. Agardh var. obovata C. Agardh (1822: 349), which in turn is a legitimate renaming, at the varietal level, of Gigartina ovata Lamouroux (1813: 136, pl. 10: fig. 7). The latter species was shown by Kraft & Min-Thein (1983: 172) to be conspecific with the alga previously known as Rhabdonia globifera J. Agardh (1851: 355-356). Those authors made this species the type of a new genus, Claviclonium, in the Acrotylaceae. The present species of Botryocladia, which is well known in Australia and has been confused with Claviclonium obovatum for more than a century, has no available name. The name Botryocladia sonderi, which is proposed for it, is validated by reference to the Latin diagnosis provided by Sonder (1848: 176) and to the illustration provided by Harvey (1858: pl. X). The type is a specimen collected by Preiss (2567) from Rottnest Island, Western Australia (MEL 504344)." - (17 December 2006) - G.M. Guiry
