Fucus norvegicus Gunnerus (1772: 122), which represents the species currently known as Chondrus crispus Stackhouse, was mistakenly applied by Turner (1802: 222) to the species currently known as Gymnogongrus crenulatus(Turner) J. Agardh (see Dixon & Irvine, 1977: 217).
