Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum natans (Linnaeus) Gaillon.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: "Indica" (probably Jamaica); (Silva & al. 1996: 687) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Børgesen (1914a: 9) for more information on the lectotype locality of this species.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), swimming, floating on or under the surface of the water (Stearn 1973).
