The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ulvaria is Ulva fusca Postels & Ruprecht.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Biarritz, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France (Kützing 1843: 296). Holotype: P.A.C. Endress; iv.1831; L 938.53.77 (Kützing 1843: 296).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), dark, shady, indisctinct (Stearn 1973).

Nomenclatural notes
Proposal by P. Gayral (1964: 2151) is invalid: the basionym was not cited; cited Monostroma obscurum (Kützing) J. Agardh.

Distributional notes
This species was introduced accidentally, probably via oysters from Japan, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 287), being first found in the Etang de Thau (France) in 1985. It has also been reported from the N Adriatic. - (6 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry
