Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Acanthoceras shuttleworthianum Kützing

Type information
Type locality: an den irischen Küsten: Shuttleworth! [Ireland] (Kützing 1842: 739). Lectotype: Shuttleworth; L 940.265.127 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 72). Notes: No more precise locality is known in Ireland, although Shuttleworth is known to have been in Renvyl, Co. Galway in July, 1832 (M.E. Mitchell, pers. comm., Nov. 2001). He appears to have sent several Irish specimens to Kützing.

Nomenclatural notes
Nielsen & Gunnarsson (2001: 55) and Skage et al. (2005) record the authorities for this species as “(Kütz.) Silva”.

Taxonomic notes
Guiry (1997) notes this combination was first introduced by Rabenhorst (1846) and not by Silva (1959).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Densely tufted,dark purple fronds, to 150 mm long, repeatedly dichotomous, of uniform diameter throughout. Axils wide, apices strongly inrolled. Articulations corticated at nodes, each node with 3-celled, short, pigmented spine on outer side.

Habitat
On rock, on mussels and epiphytic, intertidal, on exposed shores common.
